Further Parliamentary support - Catalonia officially endorses Mayors for Peace

April 22, 2009
The 2020 Vision Campaign Secretariat was recently informed of a by the Spanish regional Catalan Parliament supporting the objectives of Mayors for Peace and promoting the abolition of nuclear weapons. The Declaration, endorsed by the plenary on the 18th December 2008, can be read in full here (Catalan only). This news follows the more recent Belgian Senate resolution endorsing the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol and the work of Mayors for Peace.

This important parliamentary support that we have received in both Belgium and Spain is encouraging proof of the positive and gradual change of tide with regard to nuclear disarmament on every political level.

Even US President Obama in his Prague Declaration on 5th April stated “clearly and with conviction America's commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.” Like us, he stresses the need to “strengthen the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty” and for “concrete steps” to achieve nuclear abolition.

For this victory in Spain, we would once again like to express our appreciation for the hard and consistent work of the city of Granollers, in particular Mayor Josep Mayoral i Antigas and our contact Ms. Carme Barbany Ciurans.
