Opportunity: European Voluntary Service, Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign

Description of the organisation:

Mayors for Peace was formed in 1982 after the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki appeared at the 2nd UN Special Session on Disarmament and called for cities to come together in solidarity for peace and, specifically, the abolition of nuclear weapons. Today, Mayors for Peace is an integral, leading force in a growing city diplomacy movement seeking to ensure that the voice and role of cities is recognized by national governments. In November 2003, when Mayors for Peace launched the 2020 Vision Campaign we had 562 members. Since then we have grown in size dramatically. As of 1 July 2010, our membership stood at 4,037 cities in 144 countries and regions.

Information about the project:
 
Since September 2007, the International Campaign Secretariat of the Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign Association has welcomed young people within the framework of the European Voluntary Service of the EU. We are looking for motivated youth to work with us. Office language is English, other languages (French, Spanish, etc.) are a plus.
 
Are you interested in an intercultural experience? And working on a campaign to ban all nuclear weapons by 2020? Transport, food and accommodation are provided, as well as pocket-money.

Mayors for Peace was formed in 1982 after the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki appeared at the 2nd UN Special Session on Disarmament and called for cities to come together in solidarity for peace and, specifically, the abolition of nuclear weapons. Today, Mayors for Peace is an integral, leading force in a growing city diplomacy movement seeking to correct the balance of power between municipal and national governments. In November 2003, when Mayors for Peace launched the Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons, we had 562 members. Since then the Emergency Campaign has become the 2020 Vision Campaign, and we have grown in size through our Good Faith Challenge and Cities Are Not Targets programs and the recent launch of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol. As of 1 March 2010, our membership stood at 3,680 cities in 134 countries and regions.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to work as an intern at the Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign International Secretariat in Ieper, Belgium. Your work will be varied and will include anything from basic administrative tasks to assistance in organizing events and conferences. You should be willing to work in an international team and feel comfortable communicating with people all over the world.
 
Required qualifications/skills:
·         Excellent communication/interpersonal skills
·         Excellent time management skills
·         Pro-active, ability to work on own initiative and as part of a small team
·         Strong organizational skills
·         A good knowledge of English is desirable, as the main language of communication in the office is English
