The Catalan association of municipalities calls its members to join international network for the elimination of nuclear weapons
Barcelona, June 12th 2008 - The ACM has delivered among its municipalities the registration form required to become a member of the international network Mayors for Peace whose final target is to abolish nuclear weapons.
According to an official statement, about 50 Catalan Mayors are already members of Mayors for Peace and 10 are working on the procedures to join an organization that counts 2,277 Mayors in 129 countries.
This network was created as the proposal that Takeshi Araki, Mayor of Hiroshima, launched in the 2nd Special Session on Disarmament in the UN on June 24th 1982. Araki proposed then to create a Program to Promote Solidarity among Cities to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
This proposal was launched by the Mayor of Hiroshima, city which together with Nagasaki was victim of the use of nuclear weapons in August 1945 during the 2nd War World. This text encourages the foundation of a network whose mission is to help coordinating the cities that support the Program to Promote Solidarity among Cities to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
Mayors for Peace supports the 2020 Vision campaign, a campaign to create a plan towards the total abolition of nuclear weapons by 2020 when the NPT Review Conference will be held.
