Efforts underway in Belarus
January 14, 2008
Activities are being deveoped to promote Mayors for Peace in Belarus. In the young history of this country we need to know that the government of Belarus withdrew Russian nuclear weapons from its territory after collapse of the Soviet Union. Belarus also introduced several proposals for the establishment of a European Nuclear Weapon Free Zone.
The Mayor of Minsk is the only member of Mayors for Peace to date. Despite some very nice letters from the Mayor of Minsk to the Hiroshima Mayor, we were not able to get anything moving on the official level yet.
Ms. Lana Ramanchykava, a Belarussian member of BANG Youth network, tries hard to get something moving in her country for Mayors for Peace. BANG stands for Ban All Nukes Generation, and gathers youth from across Europe.
The BANG representative wrote to Mayor of Minsk twice but didn't receive the confirmation from Minsk City Executive Committee about possibility to meet with the Mayor. She also consulted with secretary of Committee with no results so far.
She also invited other mayors of big Belarusian cities of Grodno, Brest, Mogilev, Vitebsk and Gomel, to join to the Mayors for Peace. Is been followed up.
