Sample resolution for your City Council
Support us now: Sample resolution (below) for your city councilWe encourage all member cities to make financial contributions to the 2020 Vision campaign. It is not right that the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have been carrying the financial responsibility for Mayors for Peace since 1982, an estimated 250,000 euro/year. This is now changing.
On May 28th 2008, 65 Belgian cities and municipalities made commitments to support the international 2020 Vision Campaign financially. An increasing number of cities are responding to the letter of the Executive Conference concerning financial support for the 2020 Vision campaign. We are happy to register the positive response of the Cities of Leihhardt, NSW and Melbourne (Australia), Duncan, BC and Chetwynd, BC (Canada), Koprivnica (Croatia), Malakoff (France), Bloemendaal and Maasgouw (Netherlands), Riudecanyes (Spain), Geneva and Lausanne (Switzerland) and Oxford (UK). Most cities and municipalities use the 0,025 euro/inhabitant/year.
Without financial support and solidarity from the other member cities and municipalities the 2020 Vision will remain a dream. However, we are confident that you will be able to get following resolution approved in your City Council
Small is beautiful
The Belgian Mayor of Geetbets, Mr. Benny Munten, demonstrated vision and commitment. The municipality of Geetbets (Flemish Brabant) decided to donate 0,025 euro/ inhabitant up to 2020. With 5,765 inhabitants this makes 144 euro/year x 14 years = 2020 euro.

Sample City Council Resolution to Support "Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign"
Whereas the past decade has seen no sign of the “good faith negotiations” for the elimination of nuclear arsenals promised under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT, 1970) and mandated by an unanimous advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice in 1996;
Whereas the past decade has seen both horizontal (new countries in possession) and vertical (new types of weapons) proliferation of nuclear weapons;
Whereas the development of nuclear bunker-busters, mini-nukes and other “usable” nuclear weapons is increasing the probability that such weapons will be used;
Whereas reliable news reports and public statements of national policy have revealed that the taboo against the combat use of nuclear weapons is weakening;
Whereas any violation of the taboo against the use of nuclear weapons is extremely likely to stimulate further violations;
Whereas the use of even a small nuclear weapon could destroy a city, killing up to one million people, or disable a megaport or destroy a nuclear power plant, thereby severely damaging the global economy, and that a nuclear exchange of as few as 100 nuclear explosions would plunge the world into ten years of cold and famine resulting in up to one billion deaths;
Whereas the use of any nuclear weapon for any purpose whatsoever is illegal, immoral and obscenely dangerous;
Whereas it is vital to rapidly arouse the global public and create a worldwide political climate in strong, unwavering support of the taboo against the use of nuclear weapons; and
Whereas the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have since 2003 been leading an emergency campaign to ban nuclear weapons but cannot afford to support the entire global campaign on their own;
Therefore be it resolved that the City of __________ openly declares its support for the Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign to eliminate all nuclear weapons by the year 2020;
and be it further resolved that, as concrete evidence of this support, this city shall contribute a sum equivalent to € 0,025 per citizen (*) to assist the campaign; and finally, be it resolved that said sum shall be contributed by (date, 200?) and a similar sum contributed on that date every year until and including 2020 (or other year), subject to annual review of the campaign and the city’s commitment to it.
(*) amount chosen by most city councils. Please use your currency if applicable
