London Mayor Ken Livingstone joined the Mayors for Peace in 2001
Thank you for inviting me to speak at the opening session of the IPPNW conference ‘The Final Epidemic: Preventing Proliferation and Achieving Abolition’. I am sorry that I will be unable to attend this event advancing the goal of a nuclear-weapons-free world. I am pleased to welcome medical colleagues from around the world who have travelled to London for this conference to discuss such an important global issue.
I joined the Mayors for Peace in 2001 and continue to fully support their campaign to rid the world of nuclear weapons by 2020. The continuing presence of nuclear weapons makes the world less safe, increasing tensions between countries and people, and threatens millions of lives.
Best wishes for a successful conference.
Ken Livingstone
Mayor of London
